The project is coming to a close. We unfortunately did not have the time to actually complete all of the effects we hoped to by the end of the quarter. This was a pretty hard shot and many things came up we did not expect. Still working on getting the smoke and explosions to look better. Video and breakdowns will be posted very soon.

Work continues . . . I’ve still been refining the hands/arms/gun. I’ve started working on the dynamics for the truck explosion. I think I’ll render a combination of volumetrics and sprites augmented with flying debris from the truck (wheels, fenders, etc.). I also began working on the particles for shot 8 of Jordan’s sub project (it’s really gonna suck!!!) and will be writing a Mel script for Kat Walker this weekend.

Adam did the foreground replacement for the surface of the tank under the gun (although the gun’s shadow is gonna be a little bit tricky). He also got the road blended nicely and did a little more unexpected removal of the gun barrel that was revealed during the road blending process.

Things coming together

Chris did a nice job on the gun. It’s modeled and animated is ready for textures and lighting.

While the gun is being lit, so will the road. We’re not getting very good results by attempting to color correct the cg road in post.

The rig removal is done. It’s not perfect, but once we add smoke, gun shells, it will mask any short comings.
If I must…i’ll add in some heat distortion for added cover-ups.

In the next few days, I will have re-created the other side of the truck.

The rotos still need to have their motion blurs tweaked. As of now, there is no motion blur. I’ll have to go in and add a few more roto details while the truck is swinging over.

Here is a list of goals for midterm presentation:
Chris: CG gun textured/shaded and with lighting.

Rig Removal Update w/ extras

After working with the footage for a great deal of time, I have realized that removing the barrel from the footage was only the start to cleaning up the clip.
The matchmove came out pretty good, but because of its small problems, the sides of the road had to be feathered greatly. I had to remove many parts of the gun that I intended the road to cover.

This clip is the removal before the road was added. As you will see, there is still rig removal needed for the right side of the clip. The left side of the clip is very clean after many hours of work.

Here the road has been added. There is a great deal of color correction that needs to be done. I’ve requested to Chris that he make a rgb matte for the road’s distance as well an rgb matte for end to end. This will give me x,y accuracy throughout the entire cg road. Also, he has given me a procedural dirt pass for the right side of the road. It might come in hand in aiding the removal of gun.

This clip contains the rough roto applied back on top of the clip. As you will see, there is some roto that still needs to be complete.
Once the road is graded, it might be possible to feather back in the details,especially in the fabric, from the original cilp.

Over the last few days I’ve been working at removing the barrel that dips into the medium and road to the left of the shot. This is very difficult because of the move of the shot. I’ve used techniques such as optical flow, patching and offseting the footage. Some areas were more successful then others. I will continue to work on this within the next few days.

Tracking Continues

This matchmove is tough . . . real tough. I initially thought it was going to be fairly easy/moderate, but the motion blur when the camera pans is causing some serious problems. I’ve got a series of fairly accurate chunks of frames . . . just need to stitch the cameras. I did get a proxy scene going in Maya . . . and started a few rough explosion tests in Houdini.

After extensive analysis of the 320 frames, Chris and I have decided that the removal of the gun and its animation will best be accomplished from frames 115 to frames 284.

Matchmoving + Explosion Reference

I started on the camera matchmove for the shot. It’s a fairly tricky shot – Adam helped out by creating a nice garbage matte to mask out the gunner in the foreground. A little finessing of the tracking parameters and solving tolerances in PFTrack has gotten me pretty far, though there is still a good deal of slipping/scene orientation/focal length mess to deal with. Here’s a .mov of my current progress on the solve . . .
